PLANNING AND BOOKING

1.      Are there any cultural taboos or customs that I should know of before travelling to Africa ?

It is important to be mindful of the local cultural customs and traditions of the communities you visit. While customs can vary across different countries and regions, here are some general guidelines:

  • Dress Code: It is advisable to dress conservatively, particularly when visiting religious sites or rural areas. Avoid wearing revealing clothing or clothing with offensive symbols. Additionally, it’s polite to remove your shoes when entering someone’s home or a place of worship.

  • Greetings: Greetings are an essential part of African culture. It’s customary to greet people with a handshake or, in some countries, a slight bow or nod of the head. It’s also polite to use common greetings such as ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ in the local language. Respect for elders is highly regarded.

  • Photography and Respect for Privacy: Always ask for permission before taking photographs of individuals, especially in rural communities. Some cultures may consider it disrespectful or offensive to be photographed without consent. It is also important to respect people’s privacy and refrain from taking photos in sacred or sensitive areas unless specifically permitted.

  • Wildlife and Environment: Africa’s wildlife and natural environment are treasures to be protected. Follow the guidance of your guides regarding proper behaviour around wildlife. Avoid littering and adhere to responsible tourism practices, such as not disturbing animal habitats or plants.

Researching, understanding and respecting the specific customs of the region you are visiting will enhance your appreciation of their culture, positive interactions and ensure a more enriching and meaningful experience during your African travels.
